Closing the Gaps in SOA Adoption
Evolved Media was commissioned by a leading technology company to write a white paper that explains how to close the "gaps" in SOA adoption. This paper describes the points of pain that appear in a company, in the business, but mostly in the Information Technology (IT) department as the demands of SOA expose what we call gaps. The gaps are areas that require new technology, new processes, or training so that people know how to use SOA to create better ways of doing business while keeping track of and reducing the risk that ensues from deploying SOA.
The paper looks at the gaps faced by each role in a business in three gaps in promoting SOA adoption:
- Gaps in Promoting SOA Adoption. Those gaps faced by enterprise architects and CTOs who must design and run a program guided by appropriate governance and management mechanisms that minimize risks and maximizes adoption
- Gaps in Providing Services. Those gaps faced by service providers in publishing services for reuse
- Gaps in Consuming Services. Gaps facing service consumers, who are creating composite applications from services
The paper explains that the net effect of closing these gaps is a transformation of IT from an ad hoc collection of skills that are applied informally, to a scalable and well-organized factory that is focused on supplying services to meet the pressing needs of a business. The agility and flexibility that results can make the costs and difficulties of adopting SOA seem a small investment in comparison, however daunting they may appear at first.
